History

Mallard was built in Doncaster in 1938 and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as an express locomotive to power high-speed streamlined trains. It still holds the world speed record for a steam traction at 126mph!

Mallard was in service until 1963, when it was retired, having covered almost one and a half million miles (2.4 million km). It was restored to working order in the 1980s.

The National Railway Museum, York is the largest railway museum in the world. Its permanent displays and collections illustrate over 300 years of British railway history, from the industrial revolution to the present day. The NRM archive also includes a fabulous collection of railway advertising posters charting the history of rail.

The Mallard is currently on view at the NRM - York W: www.nrm.org.uk T: 08448 153139 E: nrm@nrm.org.uk
